Privacy & Legal

This page explains how The AI Argument website uses data, the services we rely on, and the privacy choices available to you.

At a glance

We keep things fairly simple.

  • We do not use advertising or conversion-tracking pixels.
  • YouTube videos and the Buzzsprout audio player do not load until you allow optional features and external media.
  • Your privacy choice is remembered in your browser and can be changed at any time.
  • The game leaderboard has some additional processing, explained separately below.

Your privacy choices

The site uses two categories of functionality:

Essential

These are things needed for the website to work properly and securely.

This includes storing a small first-party preference record in your browser so the site can remember whether you have allowed optional features. That preference is not used for analytics, advertising or profiling.

It remains in your browser until you change your preference or clear the site's stored data.

Optional features & external media

This currently covers:

  • embedded YouTube video
  • the Buzzsprout audio player

These services are blocked until you choose to allow them.

If you allow optional features, those third-party services may receive technical information such as your IP address, browser or device information and may store or access information on your device in accordance with their own privacy policies.

You can withdraw or change your choice at any time using Privacy settings in the website footer.

Services we use

Cloudflare

Cloudflare provides hosting, delivery and security services for this website.

Like other web infrastructure providers, Cloudflare may process technical information needed to deliver and protect the site, including IP addresses, browser and network information, request information and security signals.

We use this processing because it is necessary for the secure and reliable operation of the website and in our legitimate interests in protecting the site and its visitors.

Google Fonts

The standalone game uses fonts provided by Google Fonts. When these fonts are loaded, your browser connects to Google's servers and may send technical information such as your IP address and browser information.

We use Google Fonts only to provide the intended visual presentation of the game, not for advertising or behavioural tracking. The fonts load independently of your optional-media preference.

YouTube

Episode videos are hosted by YouTube.

YouTube content does not load until you allow Optional features & external media.

Where possible, we use YouTube's Privacy Enhanced Mode through youtube-nocookie.com. Google states that views through this version of the embedded player are not used to personalise the viewer's YouTube browsing experience.

Once you choose to load YouTube content, Google's own privacy terms apply to your interaction with the player.

Buzzsprout

The podcast audio player is provided by Buzzsprout.

The player does not load until you allow Optional features & external media.

When podcast audio is requested from Buzzsprout, Buzzsprout records limited listener information including IP address, user agent and, in some cases, the referring URL. Buzzsprout says it uses this information to provide podcast statistics, prevent fraudulent or illegal activity and meet legal obligations.

Game and leaderboard

The AI Argument game includes an optional leaderboard.

The leaderboard uses Cloudflare services including D1 for leaderboard data and Turnstile to help distinguish genuine users from automated abuse.

Cloudflare says Turnstile processes signals including IP address, user-agent information, TLS fingerprint and information about the site on which the challenge appears.

More detail is available in our leaderboard privacy information.

Why we process information

Where personal data is processed through the website, the legal basis depends on what is happening.

We rely on our legitimate interests where processing is necessary to operate, secure and protect the website, provided those interests do not override your rights and interests.

We rely on your consent before loading optional third-party media such as YouTube and Buzzsprout.

Where a technology is strictly necessary to provide a feature you have requested, such as remembering your privacy choice or protecting the leaderboard against automated abuse, it may operate without optional-media consent.

You can withdraw consent for optional features at any time through Privacy settings.

International data transfers

Some of the service providers used by this website are based in, or may process information in, the United States and other countries outside the European Economic Area.

Where personal data is transferred outside the EEA, the relevant providers use recognised transfer safeguards where required. These may include the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, European Commission adequacy decisions and Standard Contractual Clauses.

Cloudflare, Google and Buzzsprout publish further information about the safeguards they use for international transfers in their own privacy documentation.

How long information is kept

We keep personal data only for as long as it is needed for the purpose for which it was processed, or where retention is required by law.

Your website privacy preference remains stored in your browser until you change it or clear the site's stored data.

Leaderboard-related retention is explained in the separate leaderboard privacy notice.

Infrastructure and security providers may retain technical logs and security information according to their own documented retention policies.

Your data-protection rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have the right to:

  • access personal data held about you
  • correct inaccurate personal data
  • ask for personal data to be deleted
  • restrict certain processing
  • object to certain processing
  • receive certain data in a portable format
  • withdraw consent where processing relies on consent

Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that was lawful before consent was withdrawn.

To make a request, email [email protected].

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.

The site links to articles, podcast platforms and other external websites. Those websites operate independently and have their own privacy practices. We are not responsible for how third-party websites handle your information once you leave The AI Argument.

Changes to this notice

We may update this notice if the services used by the site or the way data is processed changes.
